Vaccination plays a vital role in protecting individuals, families and the wider community from serious and preventable diseases.

Staying up to date with recommended vaccines is one of the most effective ways to safeguard your child’s health. At Varo Medical in Hobart, we offer a comprehensive range of government-funded and private vaccines for both children and adults. Our experienced clinical team provides immunisations in a supportive, family-friendly environment, ensuring your child feels safe and comfortable throughout their appointment.

Childhood Immunisations at Varo Medical

Routine childhood vaccinations follow the Australian National Immunisation Program (NIP) schedule. These vaccines are carefully timed to protect children when they are most vulnerable to diseases such as:

  • Influenza
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Chicken pox
  • Whooping cough (pertussis)
  • Measles

The current Tasmanian immunisation schedule can be viewed via the Tasmanian Department of Health website.

In addition to National Immunisation Program vaccines, we also stock private childhood vaccines that are not funded under the NIP, including for certain meningococcal vaccines. If you are unsure whether your child requires additional protection, our doctors can guide you through the options.

Keeping your child’s vaccinations up to date not only protects them as they grow, but also helps reduce the spread of preventable diseases within the community.

You can check whether your child’s vaccinations are up to date through your myGov account. Alternatively, our team can review your child’s immunisation history and help you plan any catch-up vaccinations if required.

Booking a Childhood Vaccination Appointment in Hobart

Vaccinations are available by appointment at Varo Medical. Childhood vaccination appointments include a general health check to ensure your child is developing and growing as expected.

If you have questions about which vaccines are recommended for your child, need advice about catch-up immunisations, or would like to discuss optional vaccines, our doctors are happy to help.

Childhood Vaccinations FAQs

What vaccines does my child need in Australia?

In Australia, children receive vaccines according to the National Immunisation Program schedule. These vaccines protect against serious diseases including diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, hepatitis B, rotavirus, pneumococcal disease, measles, mumps and rubella. Additional vaccines may be recommended depending on your child’s age, medical history or risk factors. If you’re unsure what your child needs, our team at Varo Medical can review their records and provide personalised advice.

What age does my child receive vaccinations?

Childhood vaccines are given at specific ages, starting from birth. Most immunisations are scheduled at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and 4 years. Following the recommended timing ensures your child is protected as early as possible. If your child has missed a vaccine, catch-up schedules are available and can be arranged during an appointment.

Are childhood vaccines safe?

All vaccines provided under the National Immunisation Program are thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness before being approved for use in Australia. Like any medication, vaccines can cause adverse reactions but thankfully most of them are mild in nature. Examples of mild side effects include redness at the injection site, mild fever or irritability. Serious side effects are very rare. If you have concerns about vaccine safety, our doctors are happy to discuss the evidence and answer your questions.

How do I check if my child is up to date with their immunisations?

You can check your child’s immunisation history statement through your myGov account, linked to Medicare. If you are unsure how to access this information, or would prefer assistance, our team can review your child’s vaccination record and advise whether any vaccines are due.

What happens at a childhood vaccination appointment?

During a childhood vaccination appointment at Varo Medical, your child will receive their scheduled vaccines and an age specific health check. We take the time to answer any questions you may have and ensure you feel confident about your child’s immunisation plan.
